The iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class, known for its rugged and timeless design, has had a long and illustrious history, enduring for four decades before its full redesign in 2019. While the exact timeline for the next major overhaul remains uncertain, it’s evident that Mercedes-Benz intends to keep the current G-Class fresh through periodic updates, much like its predecessor.

Exterior Updates

Recently, camouflaged prototypes for an updated G-Class have been spotted undergoing testing. Notable changes can be seen in the revised front and rear fascias, signaling a refreshed look for this beloved SUV. These updates are not limited to the standard G-Class, as the high-performance AMG G 63 is also undergoing testing.

Interior Enhancements

Our spy photographer reports that the dashboard of the test vehicle was concealed, suggesting potential interior changes as well. A significant update expected inside is the integration of Mercedes’ advanced MBUX infotainment system, which is a feature in most of Mercedes’ current lineup but has yet to make its way to the G-Class.

Powertrain Evolution

One of the more substantial changes on the horizon is the anticipated discontinuation of the V-8 engine in non-AMG versions of the G-Class. Instead, an inline-6 engine paired with a mild-hybrid system is expected to replace it in the updated G-Class. While a G 500 V8 Final Edition was launched overseas, the fate of the U.S. version, the G 550, regarding the V-8 is yet to be officially confirmed, but it is likely to follow the same path. The V-8 engine will, however, continue to power the AMG G 63, albeit now complemented by a mild-hybrid system. There are also whispers of a potential plug-in hybrid option in the future, similar to what’s already available in AMG’s S 63 E Performance and GT 63 S E Performance 4-Door Coupe. This setup would harness the twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 and an electric motor to generate a combined output of around 800 hp.

2025 Redesign and Beyond

The updated G-Class is expected to make its debut next year as a 2025 model in the U.S. market, promising an exciting evolution of this classic SUV. Furthermore, an all-electric EQG version, equipped with four motors, is also undergoing testing and is slated for release around the same time.

Looking ahead, Mercedes has plans to introduce a compact G-Class later in the decade, featuring an electric powertrain. This expansion showcases the brand’s commitment to electrification and the G-Class’s enduring popularity.
