At SEMA this year, GMC has unleashed a 2024 GMC Sierra Grande Concept  that’s set to reignite the appeal of the single cab pickup while amping up off-road capabilities. Teaming up with AEV (American Expedition Vehicles), GMC introduces the GMC Sierra Grande Concept, built upon the foundation of a GMC Sierra 2500 HD in a single cab, long bed configuration. This concept not only simplifies the design by trimming back the number of doors to a more off-road-friendly two but also embraces the spirit of adventure with remarkable modifications.

Taking on Off-Roading Challenges

The folks at AEV have essentially created a downsized version of the Sierra HD AT4X, enhancing off-road capabilities by transferring the AT4X’s suspension components into a heavy-duty truck powered by a diesel engine. The Sierra Grande aims to solve the size-related challenges that the GMC Sierra HD AT4X posed, making it a more adept off-roader.

Key Modifications

  • Front-End Enhancements: The concept takes cues from the Sierra HD AT4X AEV Edition with a stamped steel front bumper and an added prototype brush guard for added front-end protection. Four 7000 series off-road lights and a GM Performance/ComeUp 12.5k winch are integrated for enhanced visibility and recovery capabilities. An AEV Snorkel ensures clean air intake for the 6.6L Duramax diesel engine, even in extreme off-road conditions.
  • Underbody Protection: To navigate challenging terrains with confidence, the Sierra Grande includes underbody protection with a stamped steel front skid plate, IFS skid plate, and transfer case skid plate, all sourced from the Sierra HD AT4X AEV Edition.
  • Suspension Upgrades: AEV worked closely with GMC’s engineering team to incorporate several components from the Sierra HD AT4X, including control arms, steering knuckles, rear suspension, and Multimatic® DSSV dampers. This factory-tuned combination provides a 1.5-inch lift over standard HD models, offering improved off-road performance without compromising comfort or durability.
  • Tire and Wheel Combination: The concept rolls on massive 40-inch BFGoodrich tires mounted on AEV Salta XD wheels, providing impressive ground clearance and traction for tackling rough terrain.
  • Utility Features: An 8-foot aluminum tray bed, AEV vertical tire mount, custom AEV rear bumper, ComeUp 9.5k winch, and an ARB on-board air system complete the build, offering practicality and versatility for off-roading adventures.

Off-Road Focus

The Sierra Grande isn’t aiming to be a luxury vehicle. It sports a cloth interior, underscoring its rugged and no-nonsense approach. This concept puts a spotlight on off-road performance and the thrill of exploration.

Conclusion

While single cab trucks have become increasingly rare in a world dominated by crew cab models, the GMC Sierra Grande Concept stands as a bold testament to the enduring allure of the single cab, long bed configuration. Though it may not see production, this concept serves as a showcase of what can be achieved in the world of off-road-capable pickups.
