Introduction
The 2nd Generation Hyundai Santro made its debut in Pakistan in 2000, courtesy of the Dewan Farooq Group. Representing a front-engine, front-wheel-drive hatchback, the Santro set itself apart with its unique design and the introduction of an electronic fuel-injected engine, a pioneering feature in its class.
Variants and CNG Integration
Offering versatility, the Hyundai Santro came in six variants: Exec, Prime, Club, Club GV, Prime GV, and Exec GV. Notably, the GV variants featured Lovato CNG kits. Despite initial success, Hyundai faced challenges with its Pakistani dealership, leading to production suspension in 2009. However, the company resolved issues and released the remaining 300 units in 2014. Competitive pricing positioned the Hyundai Santro favorably against other hatchbacks in its class.
Exterior Design
The exterior design of the Hyundai Santro (2003-2014) showcased a distinctive aesthetic, characterized by circular headlights, a rectangular grille, and a modest air intake. The rear boasted sleek, narrow stacked taillights within a standard hatchback profile. This unique design language set the Santro apart from its competitors, making it a standout choice in the market.
Interior Features
Inside, the 2014 Hyundai Santro embraced grey plastic trim pieces, fabric-covered seats, and a range of features. The Club variant offered air conditioning, cup holders, rear windscreen wiper, and a rear defogger. The Prime variant elevated the experience with a stereo speaker system. The Exec variant went further with power lock doors, power steering, power windows, and a rear windscreen wiper. GV variants provided a folding rear seat and cupholders. The interior, though, revealed limitations, especially in rear space and cargo capacity.
Performance and Mileage
Powering the Santro was a 1.0-liter SOHC 12-valve inline-4 engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. With an average mileage ranging between 10KM/L to 12KM/L, the compact hatchback promised an estimated driving range of 350 to 420KM from its 35-liter fuel tank.
Competition and Specifications
In the competitive landscape, the Hyundai Santro faced off against rivals such as Suzuki Mehran, Suzuki Cultus (2nd Generation), Suzuki Alto (1st Generation), and Toyota Vitz (1st Generation). The specifications boasted a 1.0-liter SOHC 12-valve inline-4 engine delivering 61bhp@5500RPM.
